Knit your dog a proper cable jumper this winter!

This is a PDF knitting pattern for a classic cable-knit dog jumper with a ribbed roll neck. A panel of three rope cables runs right down the middle of the back, with smooth stocking stitch at the sides, rib cuffs around the front legs and a rib hem at the tail end. It looks gorgeous in Christmas red, fisherman cream or forest green.

It's sized by chest (the measurement that matters most for fit) in 5 sizes, XS to XL, for chests from 23 to 69 cm, and every size gives the back length and neck too. It's knitted flat in two pieces on straight needles (a back piece with the cable panel and a stretchy rib belly piece), then seamed at the sides. The cable panel is the same 22 stitches in every size, so the cables look just as good on a tiny dog as a bigger one.

SIZES (choose by chest; always measure your dog)

XS | chest 23–31 cm | jumper back 24 cm | neck 17–22 cm | cast on 42 sts | 130 m aran

S | chest 32–40 cm | jumper back 30 cm | neck 22–27 cm | cast on 54 sts | 185 m aran

M | chest 41–50 cm | jumper back 37 cm | neck 27–33 cm | cast on 70 sts | 275 m aran

L | chest 51–59 cm | jumper back 44 cm | neck 33–39 cm | cast on 82 sts | 385 m aran

XL | chest 60–69 cm | jumper back 51 cm | neck 39–45 cm | cast on 94 sts | 500 m aran

Jumper back = base of the neck to the hem, about 2 cm shorter than the dog's back (base of neck to base of tail). The length is easy to adjust.

Breed examples are only a guide: e.g. a miniature dachshund in S (with extra length), and a miniature schnauzer, Jack Russell or small Westie in M. Please always measure.

Designed to fit

  • Sized by chest, with a length adjustment point for longer or shorter backs
  • A short-belly option for boys
  • An optional harness hole for the D-ring of a back-clip harness
  • A stretchy rib roll neck that goes over the head with at least 2 cm to spare, then folds down for double warmth
  • Shaped armholes with rib cuffs, so nothing rubs behind the front legs
  • Open underneath at the back end, so it stays clean
  • No pompoms, buttons or labels, so there's nothing to chew off
