Personalised Dog Christmas Stocking Knitting Pattern

Hang up a stocking for the dog this Christmas!

This is a PDF knitting pattern for a personalised dog Christmas stocking: a Christmas red leg, a paw-print and bone band and a cream cuff with your dog's name in clear block capitals. It's big enough for treats, a chew and a new toy, and it makes a lovely heirloom to bring out year after year (or a thoughtful handmade gift for a dog lover).

It's knitted flat in two pieces on straight needles, in plain stocking stitch with a couple of easy stripes. There's no turned heel and no picking up: the heel and toe are shaped right into each piece with simple increases, decreases and cast-offs, then the two pieces are seamed together. The paws, bones and name are added afterwards with duplicate stitch (Swiss darning), so you can personalise it whenever you're ready.

Finished size

About 45 cm long × 23 cm wide (foot 30 cm, heel to toe). One size.

• Every letter is the same size (5 stitches × 7 rows), so every name sits on the same rows

SKILL LEVEL

Easy–intermediate. You'll need to knit, purl, work m1, ssk and k2tog, cast off at the start of a row and sew a seam. Duplicate stitch is explained step by step, so a confident beginner can make this.

You will need

• DK yarn: about 260 m of red (1 × 100 g ball) and 110 m of cream (1 × 50 g ball)
• 4 mm (UK 8 / US 6) straight needles
• A tapestry needle, a few stitch markers and some pins

22 sts and 30 rows to 10 cm over stocking stitch on 4 mm needles.

Needles:. A firm fabric holds its shape and keeps treats k/p knit / purl in. If your swatch has more sts per 10 cm, use a larger needle; if it has fewer, use.
